Tensions between Harry and Meghan and the rest of the royal family continue to run high despite the Duke of Sussex making two recent trips back to the United Kingdom, which he left last year for life in the United States.
That departure, known as Megxit, left the wider family shocked and took the Queen by surprise. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stood down from their senior royal duties at the time and have since signed a number of entertainment deals, such as with Netflix and Spotify. Their self-promotion and interviews with the likes of Oprah Winfrey have been criticised by some as cashing in on the royal brand and for being disrespectful of the Queen.
However, they say they needed to leave the UK due to it being a toxic environment with an invasive media presence.
The suggestion that the royal family may start pushing back against Harry and Meghan is not new. Last month, a columnist noted that Buckingham Palace had stopped publicly defending the pair.
“After months of having been the target of the Sussexes’ fusillade of painfully public criticism, are the Queen and her army of courtiers finally starting to far more aggressively – and obviously – fight back? Is this a case of no more Mrs Nice Queen?”
Lady C, who wrote a best-selling biography of Princess Diana in 1992, was questioned on if she thought Harry and Meghan ever thought about Princess Diana’s dislike of her friends making money off their connection to her.
“It certainly doesn’t and if it does, they don’t give a flying whatever, my dear,” she claimed. “They couldn’t care less. They wouldn’t give a continental damn as long as they can milk it for what all it’s worth and suck money out of any situation.”
Earlier in July, William and Harry reunited at Kensington Palace to unveil a statue of Princess Diana. In a joint statement, the brothers paid tribute to their mother, saying they both remember her “love, strength and character”.
“Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy.”
While the pair did spend some time together, it’s been reported Prince Harry quickly left the event after the unveiling to return to the US.
