A Wellington cyclist has had a lucky escape after a car entered the cycle lane he was travelling in.
Cyclist Jim Rustle said the incident, which happened on Monday in a cycle lane alongside Wellingtons Hutt Road, caught him by surprise. In the incident Rustle was confronted by a vehicle in the dedicated cycle lane.
I’m used to danger on the roads, but this did catch me by surprise, and I was lucky that I didn’t encounter them on the blind bend, especially at the speed they were going, Rustle said.
They were clearly idiots you have to really be trying to get lost at that bit. I was actually more irritated a few minutes later by some entitled [person] in an SUV blocking that sad excuse for a clearway on Thorndon to drop her child off, Rustle said.

A cyclist has had a lucky miss in Wellington.
Rustle said he commuted to Wellington on an e-bike from Upper Hutt and found most drivers very courteous.
It’s not their fault that Wellington’s cycling infrastructure is a bit hopeless. I’m kitted out with lights and bags, and clearly just another person getting to work, he said.
Meanwhile, a person was in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital after a car versus cycle crash on Kemp St in Kilbirnie on Tuesday morning.
Police and ambulance were called to the scene, near the ASB Sports Centre, shortly after 10am Tuesday.
