Fair City star Maclean Burke has told RTÉ Entertainment that fans will delight in the fallout from Damien and Dearbhla’s night of cheater passion, promising that plenty of characters will be “hit by the bold spoon” in the weeks ahead.
The fireworks begin on Wednesday as Burke’s Damien forgets about other half Mairéad (played by Amy Kirwan) and heads for the cheating side of Carrigstown with Dearbhla (co-star Maria Oxley Boardman).
“I’m not going to lie to you, I didn’t see it coming!” laughed Burke. “Even for Maria, she’s like, ‘What the hell is going on here?!’ It’s like these two characters have met each other in the middle of a change in their lives where they’re going, ‘I’m not really sure where I want to be. I don’t know if I’m making the right decisions’.
“Damo has been so by Mairéad’s side and locked into this relationship and beyond doubt going to make it work. Then, madness kind of takes over and he has a moment of… I don’t know. It’s bonkers!”
Damien’s transformation into Carrigstown love rat means that he has been involved with all three of the Dillon sisters – Dearbhla and siblings Neasa and Caoimhe.
“He was with Neasa at one point a couple of years ago, which in turn put a knife in an already-broken relationship with [ex] Suzanne,” Burke recounted. “Then, he had a baby with Caoimhe and there was talk of marriage and that broke down. And now he’s gone off with the youngest Dillon who’s the auntie of his daughter!
“Dearbhla was originally the one Dillon who was kind of half-ashamed of the way they went about their business – her dad Tommy and his various affairs and even her sisters. Now it’s like, ‘To Hell or to Connacht!'”
Burke said that Damien’s conscience will be “in rag order” from Thursday’s episode onwards.
“He can’t live with himself. I don’t want to give anything away, but I’ve been reading ahead for the next couple of weeks and this goes full-on soap. It’s actually brilliant stuff. There’s no one that hasn’t been hit by the bold spoon by the end of it!
“You’re going to be watching this going, ‘Oh. My. God. No way!’ It’s crazy stuff – and great to be part of it. It’s real, good old-fashioned soap stuff, which is what the punters love. When it’s a character people know and know that they shouldn’t be doing it, they just love it!
“Damo just stumbles and keeps stumbling and keeps stumbling! He has this incredible ability to just keep digging a hole no matter what. He keeps lying to all the people he shouldn’t lie to – even when he’s telling the truth, he’s lying about who he’s telling the truth about! It’s one thing after another. I truly believe people are going to love this one.”
