South Africa recorded 21 584 new laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 infections and 382 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 61 029 on Thursday.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Thursday, the country recorded 1 995 556 laboratory-confirmed cases.
“The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 21 584 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 28.4% positivity rate,” the statement read.
As of Thursday, Gauteng recorded 662 300 confirmed cases, KwaZulu-Natal 355 847 and the Western Cape 324 891.
“The Gauteng province accounts for the majority of new cases (59%), followed by the Western Cape (11%) and North West (7%) provinces,” NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.
Gauteng recorded 12 806 new cases on Thursday, the Western Cape 2 447 and North West 1 468.

There was an increase of 769 hospital admissions in the last 24-hour reporting cycle. As of Thursday, 13 396 people were being treated in both public and private hospitals.
South Africa conducted 13 209 499 cumulative tests by Thursday, of which 76 071 were carried out in the last 24-hour reporting cycle.
The recovery rate is 87.9%, which translates to 1 754 793 recoveries.
The total number of people vaccinated is 3 155 717, with 129 081 vaccine doses administered in the last 24-hour cycle.
