A Filipino seafarer who was infected by the B1617.2 variant, or the so-called “Indian variant” of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has died, the Department of Health said.
He was one of the nine sailors from the stricken M/V Athens Bridge vessel who tested positive for the variant.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the patient, who listed Parañaque City as his address, died on Friday at the Manila Medical Center, where three of his fellow seafarers are also confined.
The rest of the crew who tested positive for the variant have been released to their respective local government units to continue their quarantine.
