eh, kinda. The tide caused by a heavenly body is proportional to its mas divided by the cube of its distance from us. (it’s the cube because as you probably know, gravitational strength drops off as the SQUARE of distance, but the tide is caused by the gradient of the gravity (i.e. its derivative with respect to distance) so when you take the gravitational field strength that’s already going as one over r2, then take its derivative, you get 1/r3).
And for the sun and the moon, those result in roughly the same number, which when combined with the field strength at the surface of the earth, results in about a 6 inch to a foot bulge.
But the tides in most places are much larger than that. What’s up? Well, there’s resonance, like water sloshing in a bathtub. If the amount of time it takes for a slosh to occur is close to 12 hours, then the slosh will be amplified. Otherwise, it won’t be amplified that much.
The other thing to take note of is the earth itself, not just the oceans, do the tidal dance as well. It’s called the earth tide or sometimes solid tide. Just because the earth is made of rock doesn’t mean that on a planetary scale, it’s not a fluid.
