Team Irelands Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry shot a 69 and 70 to sit on -2 and -1 respectively after completing the weather-dealyed first round at the Tokyo Olympics golf tournament.
Play had earlier been suspended at Kasumigaseki County Club due to lightning in the area..
At the time of the suspension, McIlroy was playing his 14th hole, having opened with a pair of birdies, followed by a bogey on the par 4 6th.
The four-time major champion then birdied the 11th but dropped another shot on 12 after short-siding his approach shot and failing to get up and down.
A birdie on the Par 4 15th after play resumed saw McIlroy move back to -2 where he finished.
Former Open champion Lowrys tidy wedge play resulted in a birdie on the short par 4 2nd hole. However, a dropped shot on the 12th saw him fall back to level par.
A birdie on the Par 3 16th following the delay saw the Clara man get back into minus figures and he finished his day on one under.
Austrias Sepp Straka set the opening day pace with a 63, eight under par, one shot ahead of Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond with Belgiums Thomas Pieters and Mexican Carlos Ortiz a further shot back.
